Soil erodibility and runoff for Brisbane Valley soils (Harms and Silburn 1999)

Level 1 General description

Purpose:

This study involved using a rainfall simulator to investigate soil erodibility and the effects of pasture cover on soil erosion at four selected sites (Esk, Moore, Eskdale and Ottaba). These four selected sites represent the Beer, Neara, Pinch and Beppo soil profile classes, respectively.

Methods (brief)

The investigation was undertaken using a rainfall simulator with measurements of runoff, infiltration and sediment collected over a 40 minute rainfall period at a rate equivalent to a 100 mm/hr storm. Various cover treatments were used at varying slopes.

Key findings (brief)

There is a strong correlation between pasture cover and soil loss. For all four soil types, soil loss decreased as cover increased. When cover was 70% or greater, soil loss was ten times less than for bare soil (0% cover).

Location

The rainfall simulation was located 8.85 km east of Moore.
